WASTE ? NOT FOR THEM !

What all can be obtained from a banana farm ? Obviously bananas , but what else? Nothing much right ? A farmer uses the bananas that grow on these trees and sells them in the market . The rest of the plant , from bottom to top is considered to be a complete waste .

A teacher and some students from IES Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya , Dadar , have come up with unique but realistic methods of using this so called ' waste ' , to generate a lot of different types of products . Their project , 'Rural Industry And Production Of Biodiesel ' has cleared the district level competition , and is now selected for the state level . Primarily , they have created a process to generate ethanol from the waste . In this process , a 250 gm part of the plant is taken , cooked on a stove , cooled . Yeast is added in the cooled product . The product is then mashed and kept for 48 hours . The mixture is then filtered , and ethanol is obtained by using distillation . The product was then tested for its authenticity . The product is found to contain about 21.25% of ethanol , and 12% of acetaldehyde .
They have also made ropes , papers, umbrellas from the plant . Perfumes , village fuel has been prepared from the byproducts . Medicines can also be obtained from these plants . Isn't this a classic example of how we can use our wastes to create a wide range of products ? We all should definitely learn from and appreciate such initiatives . What an incredible job done by the students and the teachers of the school !:)

HELP AFTER DEATH ?!!

Students from Amulakh A.B.V. Vidyalaya , Matunga , Mumbai , have come up with a unique concept of providing help after death and no , it is not the conventional organ donation process .  According to the research done by them , about 500 KW of electricity can be generated by the heat that is produced by the burning of the bodies of  deceased persons in shamshan ghats . A water storing container has to be installed above the person .Water will be supplied to the container by a nearby water tank . The heat that is produced by the burning will be used to boil this water . The vapors can be used to rotate the installed turbines and thus , electricity can be generated . One such process can light upto 15 village homes . Moreover , the water that remains can be purified and supplied to the crops in the fields . A part of the electricity can power the shamshan ghat itself . Currently , nothing useful is obtained from the process and this will definitely be a step in the right direction . Kudos to the students and teachers of the school ! The students had exhibited the project at Technovanza 2015 , the technical fest of  V.J.T.I. which was held on 26,27,28th of December . This project was made by students Het Mewada , Pankaj Maru and their teacher Mr. Manoj Wadia .

GOVERNMENT PLANNING TO GIVE INCENTIVES TO ORGAN DONORS

In a first , organ donation may move beyond just being a donation and involve incentives and concessions for the family of the donors.
The National Organ And Tissue Transplantation Organization , a central government Body which coordinates and promotes organ transplants has called for public views regarding what kind of incentives can be offered to the donor's
family . Doctors have hailed this move and have suggested various incentives like queue free railway ticket bookings , educational waivers for children of the donor , concessions in utility bills , waiver of hospital bills up to a certain amount , etc.  At present, once the family of the patient who is declared brain dead gives consent for organ donation, the hospital bill from that moment onwards is waived off for them. However there is no other benefit or incentive involved for the family of the donor. The present law does not include any monetary concessions for the organ donor families .

Low cost Air Purifier another feat for IIT-M

As air pollution is taking a hit in the current situation; the demand for air purifier have been rising consistently and soon in some places like Delhi it may become mandatory to have a air purifier. However in the midst of all this a good news came from IIT-M where researchers have came up with the air purifier which is efficient  and cost effective at the same time. The model is a sensor based model and has capability to reduce air pollutants including the microbes. The model is a three layer air purifier similar to that of water purifier. The purifier is made from low cost materials like activated charcoal, ultraviolet light and some special fibres. The system consumes 50 watt of energy. The three layer system of purifier are as follows;first layer has a fan fitted at the bottom to suck air inside where a sensor detects pollutants which is transferred and is transferred to a bag where the  larger  particles are removed. Second layer is of activated charcoal working in absorption technique and absorbs the micro pollutants.Third layer has ultraviolet that treats bacteria and virus. The team is now working on a 360 degree model which will be more efficient than the current.

Juvenile Justice bill passed amid public , media pressure

The long pending Juvenile Justice bill , was finally passed in the Rajya Sabha on the second last day of the anything but fruitful winter session of the Parliament . The current session could pass only 3 bills out of the total 11 bills that were passed by the Lokh Sabha. The bill that was introduced as early as August 2014 , was listed 15 times before it was finally passed in the current session . THE REASON ? Public pressure , media coverage ! Had it not been better if the Rajya Sabha members would have  considered this issue to be important ( as it surely is) earlier itself , and that too on their own . Under the new law , children between 16 to 18 years of age who commit a heinous crime can be tried as adults . List of heinous crimes include the ones that have a jail term of more than 7 years like rape , murder , dacoity..The law will not be retroactive , i.e. it will not be applicable to crimes that took place before the bill was passed. The Women and Child Development Minister , Maneka Gandhi , said that the legislation was a much needed one and was much needed to act as a deterrent

IIT - M develops the technique to cure Cancer without side effect.

Targeted Action of 'Nanotubes' on cancer cell

Say no to any side effects of medicines that cure cancer , because Researchers of IIT - Madras have developed a technique to kill the cancer cells directly without affecting  the neighbour cells and tissues .

This technique uses the carbon Nanotubes to specifically target the cancer cells . Nano Technology recently has gained tremendous importance. Nanotube measuring less than one micron in length made by rolling graphene sheets is used to target cancer cells using Photodynamic Therapy and are killed by inducing  heat without any toxic effect to the body. In this therapy only cancer cells are embedded with the nanotubes which get heated and killed. This research is in collaboration with  University of Singapore. Once the research is completed it is sure that this method will be more preferred as it has an advantage of almost zero side effect . This research will Revolutionalize the Medical Science.

He has 100 honge trees on his 40 acre farm.Using the small machine developed by the University of Agricultural Science Bengaluru he produces oil and blend it with diesel in 1 :10 combination i.e. 1 litre honge oil in 10 litre diesel. It was found that the smoke emitted was reduced and the fuel was used more efficiently. This method of his saved him 25000 to 50000 bucks yearly he said.Previously other farmers used to tell  him that his oil will spoil the engine of his tractor but now seeing the success of his experiments even they started using the same method.

A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

Seven villages in the Palghar district of Maharashtra , which is just four hours from Mumbai , got electricity for the first time , nearly 68 years after Independence , thanks to the initiative taken up by the villagers who were backed by an NGO and a bank. The villagers have set up a community solar system . One person from each family worked on the project , which in turn saved them around 50,000 Rs of labour charges .
