Murugan S. Theruvoram is an autorickshaw driver . But when the police in Kochi find anyone on the street in need of help and shelter they call him . WHY? Because he is not an ordinary rickshaw driver. He has rescued more than 2,000 people , mostly the poor and mentally challenged from the streets and leaves them in the care of hospitals , shelters and old age homes .
His this selfless service has found him a place in the Limca Book of Records .He has earned the record for saving more than 2,000 people from the street .
He has been doing this noble work since 2002 . In 2013 , Murugan's NGO Theruvoram was given the responsibility of running the social justice department's shelter for homeless .
In 2012 , he had received the National Award for Social work for Women and Children bestowed by the Rashtrapati Bhavan
Lack of funding has been a problem for Theruvoram . Murugan said ,"The people we take in are extremely ill and in need of good care . Taking care of them is expensive and we manage to get by with whatever we get ."
