India's rankS fourth on the list No of thinktanks with 280 thinktanks in 2015. Last year India had 192 thinktanks and was ranked 5th. In 2015, US tops the list with 1,835 thinktanks followed by China and UK with 435 and 288 thinktanks respectively according to the 'Global Go To Think Tank Index Report (GGTTI) 2015 released on Friday.
Among the thinktanks worldwide, US based Brookings Institution emerged on top for the eight consecutive year. Six Indian thinktanks were in global top 175 list:
  • Centre for Civil Society (CCS) , rank 79.
  • Institute for Defense Studies and Analysis (IDSA) , rank 104.
  • Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relation , rank 109.
  • The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) , rank 111.
  • Observer Research Foundation (ORF) , rank 118.
  • Development Alternatives , rank 136.
If the list of thinktanks in US are excluded then four more Indian thinktanks make it to top 175 list (non-US) - Brookings India, Gateway House Indian Council on Global Relations, United Service Institution of India and Vivekananda International Foundation.
A thinktank is an organization that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology and culture. This thinktank are funded by government, advocacy groups of business or derive revenue from consulting or research work related to their projects. There are more than 6,800 thinktanks worldwide.
The list considers those  who have done excellent research in past 24 months and six Indian organisation made it to the list. The annual ranking is done by ThinkTanks and Civil Socities Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania.
"Flow of information for rich policy analysis and research today are often desperate and fractured, which leads to a vital need for resources that highlights the best policy research out there," said James McGann, director of university of Pennsylvania's TTCSP.  " The Independent index is designed to help users of information and policy analysis identity the leading centres of excellence in public policy research around the world," he added.
There is a great advancement in the no. of thinktanks in India as they increased from 190 to 282 within a year and if this continues then in the consecutive next year we would make it to the top 3.
