Sampriti Bhattacharya , 28, has created an underwater drone which can map ocean floors and explore the deep sea where even GPS doesn't work .
A South Point alumnus , Sampriti did her engineering from St Thomas College ,, masters in aerospace engineering from Ohio State University before switching to robotics at MIT .
She has also , made it to the list of the Forbes 30 most powerful young agents of the world due to her creation .
She is also a founder of a start-up - Hydroswarm that designs and markets small autonomous drones for ocean exploration and maritime big data . The drones have the shape of an egg and are roughly of the size of a football .
Sampriti said , "Underwater navigation has been a reality for many years but for advanced searches you need maps that are as refined as , say Google Maps . This is where my drone comes in . It can map the ocean , sitting on it's bed , and you can zero in on the minutest objects , living or non-living . You can also map underwater pollution with the help of this drone ," said Sampriti who is currently in Kolkata .
These drones can withstand immense pressure , can cover upto 100 square meters an hour .
She was one of the top 8 contenders out of the 200 to make it to the finals of the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship competition. She also made it to the finals of the MassChallenge Accelerator , winning $50,000 there .
This shows how talent and dedication can take individuals to unprecedented heights and we wish all the best to Samriti for her future endeavours . India is proud of her !
